June Jones – Oversigner
The SEC is not alone on the topic of oversigning...
Stumbled across a nice little article, it's a little dated but still good to see this stuff show up on the radar.

"In February, SMU released nine players from scholarship due to "failure to adhere to our department policies and/or team rules". While I'm sure there was justification for their dismissal, would coach June Jones have been so quick with the ax had he not just signed 26 fresh faces just nine days earlier? It should be noted that five of the dismissed players appealed having their scholarships revoked and three players won their appeal."
Glad to hear a few of those kids won their appeal. This type of oversigning seems to fall into the category of "new coach comes in and wants to gut the team." We'll need to do some digging, but it doesn't appear that Jones has a history of oversigning...we'll follow up on this.

I attend SMU and I know for a fact that some of those players had numerous chances to adhere to the rules such as attending class, coming to practice, showing up to games on time, etc. The players had very little, if any discipline prior to June’s arrival, hence the reason they were so inept on the football field. So he was, as you said, “gutting” the program of players who did not “buy” into the direction he wanted the program to go. The players who won their appeal, won because the staff did not properly document the incidents and inform the players of their trangressions/the consequences of them. That has since been changed. Thanks! Love the site!

Thanks for the feedback, you bring up a very interesting aspect to the oversigning issue – coaching turnover and gutting players. Here is where we stand on this. At some point, someone other than the head coach has to be held accountable for overseeing these issues. We believe the role of an athletic director is to A.) make sure the coaches are bringing in quality players (both on and off the field), and B.) make sure that a coach like June Jones never has to walk into a situation where he “has” to gut the team because there are so many bad apples. Any athletic director that allows this to go on should be fired because he either let the previous coach run the program out of control or he is allowing the new coach to treat the existing players like pawns. Either way, the AD hasn’t been doing his job if things are so bad that a new coach as to come in and essentially cut 10 players because they are completely out of control.
Quick question, did June Jones “cut” the players before or after signing day? Just curious if he waiting until he had enough new recruits to cut the other guys loose or did he wait to see how the recruiting class looked before he finally pulled the trigger.
Good stuff! Thanks for writing!!!
