ESPN’s Outside the Lines Tackles Oversigning
If you care at all about this topic then you need to watch this video.
Having watched the video, there is no question that ESPN could have done the exact same story on Nick Saban and Alabama. The parallels are eerily similar. Big name coach, long-term 35 million dollar contract, coach comes in and oversigns recruits and start gutting the roster, etc., etc. All of those things are fine when you are dealing with professional athletes, but when you are dealing with unpaid, college athletes it's a different story.
Ramogi Huma, President of the NCPA, is leading the charge on NCAA rules reform. Go check out the website!

There’s a big shock (insert sarcasm font here). The guy that Bobby Knight called out for leaving two programs on probation in his wake (Umass and Memphis), is now skirting the rules and destroynig the futures of young men at his new – even higher profile – “University”. Dick Vitale jumped to Calipari’s defense because he cares about young people!? Maybe Dickie V. should be asked to defend this practice as well…
When will the NCAA wise up and start punishing COACHES like Calipari and Saban (soon to include Pete Carroll) when the facts come out that these programs were sleazy under their watch? Can’t the NCAA have some sort of punitive penalty clause in their contracts when they agree to coach at a member institution? Couldn’t they force these rogue coaches to make financial ammends to the athletic scholarship fund when they bring penalties and sanctions upon the players and programs they controlled? Even a coah like Carroll could be penalized after he skates off to the sanctuary of the NFL. Afterall, wins and losses only really matter to these guys because more wins = more $$$$$.
I know Ohio State wasn’t successful in their attempt to withhold salary from Jim O’Brien after he cheated us out of a Final Four banner, but if the language is specific enough and the culture and intent is made public, this could be a way for the NCAA to drop the hammer on the people who are actually at fault! Ohio State was joined in their efforts by some other NCAA schools, but I don’t believe the NCAA itself, ever really got involved. I mean, do you really believe it was Derrick Rose’s idea to have someone take the SAT for him in Detroit when he lived in Chicago? Please….
Maybe Coach Knight should be asked to write a weekly column for this site. I’m sure he knows more about his competitors gaining unfair adavantages then we could ever imagine. He may be a pompass hot-head, but at least he proved that graduation and clean program ethics were important to him as a coach!
Love the site.
