US Justice Department Investigation
Another really quick post here; just wanted to get word out that the anti-trust division of the US Justice Department is now investigating the NCAA 1 year renewable scholarship rule. Here is a great article that was just published regarding the details. We'll go over this in more detail when we have more time, but in skimming over the article it appears that it speaks to the very reason this site exists.
Everyone that visits this site needs to go read this article.
Hopefully change is on the way. What's the famous saying, "abuse breeds control."

Update: SportsByBrooks has a piece up on the article above...plus a funny picture that we had nothing to do with.

I think all of us can agree we don’t want Congress anywhere near college football.

Hopefully SoccerMike takes a look at the article. He has been asking where are all of the kids who have been asked to leave school to make room for new recruits. Apparently, he has his answers kids are not willing to say anything in hopes of getting a letter of recommendation so they can continue their education. I don’t understand why people are having such a difficult time understanding how dirty this problem is.

I actually wish the NCAA would police this better. Yes scholarships are for a year and than renewed. The problem is how they are or not renewed. Right now a player is basically told they are not going to be renewed sometime during the semester to give them time to look to go elsewhere and which is understandable. The issue is when it is not renewed and how the appeal system works. It is a joke and even if players didn’t care about speaking out the current system does not protect them. They have to be told the scholarship will not be renewed, which the coach doesn’t have to do that until June 1. So if the coach wanted to they could keep him until then and not renew it at that point. So it makes more difficult for the player to find another school, plus if they are looking to transfer and play they are hoping to get a letter of recom. from their current coach.
I have no issues with the 1 year policy but would like to see changes how it is handled. If a coach is not going to renew the scholarship they must submit a recommendation on why to a nonpartial or non athletic commitee in the school that would have to determine if they agree. This way the player would have the oportunity to address his concerns. Right now it is the athletic dept or coach that makes the decision and the player has no recourse until afterwards. Also I understand issues of schools recruiting players away, but I wish the NCAA would be more open about a player that is transferring and not have to sit out a year. If it is not the player choice to leave he should not have to lose a year of eligibity. Another concern of mine is if a player is going to transfer there should be no strings attached to it. Meaning no exceptions of where he wants to go even if it is in the same conference. I saw one player this year in the SEC that asked for a transfer but he was limited regarding any options within a certian vicinity. That is wrong.

Agreed. If you want any form of the government involved with college sports then you are a fool.

Over signing happens in the Military all the time, why not advocate for those guys. D-I football players have plenty of advantages over most folks. I don’t feel bad for any of them.
